Birdwood School Board
Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Birdwood School
I hope this letter finds you all in good health, and coping well in what we know has been another very challenging time for us all.
Although our tamariki have not been able to attend school for nearly 11 weeks now and we have a tentative date of opening the school on the 15th of November, we must also be grateful for the opportunities that our tamariki have had in the last year.
We have been very fortunate to have our Principal, Jenny Bernard and the Senior Leadership Team guiding our school through this time. They have been keeping up to date in this ever changing environment, adapting, implementing and directing our staff so we can be consistent with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health’s guidelines and recommendations.
A very big thank you must also go out to all of our teaching staff. Like us all, they too have had to adapt to deliver a very different way of teaching much longer than last year’s lockdown period in Auckland. Their time, preparation of work and engagement with our tamariki over zoom meetings is greatly appreciated. Statistics tell us that engagement and “attendance” is crucial to academic success. We know online distance learning can be a challenge for our tamariki and we acknowledge their resilience, high levels of engagement and positivity.
Let’s keep telling our tamariki how well they are doing each day, and to keep showing ‘resilience’ as we do using our PB4L values. Lastly but not the least, to all our parents/caregivers/whanau, give yourselves a pat on the back also. You have all worked so hard to keep your tamariki engaged with online learning or hard pack work. This is very difficult because of the time we have been in lockdown but the board wants to acknowledge all your hard labor and perseverance during this time. Tough times don’t last. Tough people DO.
Hopefully we will be back together as a school community in the very near future.
