Notes from our Tumuaki
Whaea Vikki
Catch up on what's been happening around school in the last couple of weeks.
Kia orana katoa!
Term 3 is most definitely here and we have been lucky with the weather so far. We started the term with our Mihi Whakatau where we welcomed 30 new students and their families. We also had the opportunity to welcome Whaea Ash back to school after maternity leave, she is now teaching in Karekare with our Year 0 students. We welcomed Whaea Theresa to work in the Seniors and Whaea Misiona as a Pouāwhina in Penina o le Moana. It is so wonderful to see our school community growing, and as of today, we have 249 students. During Week 1 we celebrated Kiribati Language Week. We have quite a few students who hail from this beautiful island in Micronesia and it was wonderful to welcome Nina back to share her wonderful dancing. We look forward to celebrating Cook Island language week this week!
During Week 2, we held our Learning Conversations with our families. We thank you for coming along to these important goal-setting meetings where our students can share their next learning steps with their families. Out of our 249 students we had 161 bookings. We hope that next time, we can get even more families to join us.
Whaea Jess organised some fantastic literacy activities during our Book Creators Week last week. Our students had the opportunity to be involved in poetry writing, comic book creating and lunchtime writing workshops. Check out the Week 2 assembly document to read some of their poetry.
During Week 2, I was on bereavement leave. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Birdwood School staff who worked very hard in my absence. I was grateful to know that the school was lead so well by Matua Kevin, Whaea Sarah and Whaea Fola in my absence. E hara taku toa I te toa takitahi, he toa takitini. My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective.
I look forward to seeing lots of you at the KickStart Breakfast celebration this Friday @ 7.45.
As usual, please feel free to pop in at anytime to see me. No appointment necessary.
Mauri Ora,
